The latest Insider build of Windows 11 introduces a new power saving mode. This is more advanced than the existing system and proposes to reduce the electricity consumption of all machines connected to the sector.
Microsoft wants to help you save electricity. In the latest Insider build of Windows 11, called 26002, the Redmond company has introduced a new energy saving function that complements the function already present in the operating system. With this new power saving mode, Microsoft is targeting all users and no longer just owners of portable machines.
Reduce power consumption of mains-powered PCs
The new power saving mode being tested in Windows 11 is now much more effective. Not only does it improve the battery life of portable machines, but more importantly it also reduces the energy consumption of PCs connected to the power grid.
“While optimized to extend battery life, Power Saving will be available when PCs (including desktop PCs) are connected, for those who want to constantly save power,” explains Microsoft in its blog post.
This makes it finally possible to limit the energy consumption of desktop PCs. Obviously, these energy savings are not possible without something in return. Windows 11 actually has to make some compromises, especially by limiting certain machine performance.

You can access this new setting by going to Windows Settings in the System menu, where the Power menu is located. All you then have to do is enable the Always use power saving mode option to reduce your PC’s power consumption. Note that it is also possible to activate it from the quick settings pane on the Windows taskbar. The current energy saving mode remains in effect.

For several months, Microsoft has been increasing its initiatives to make Windows 11 a less energy-consuming operating system. Last April, for example, the Redmond company introduced content-based brightness control. Thanks to this system, which already existed in the past but has been extended to all machines related to the industry, including desktop PCs, the brightness of the screen itself is regulated. Windows 11 automatically optimizes the contrast and brightness of the screen depending on the content displayed on it.
Last year, Microsoft also made numerous efforts to reduce the energy consumption of Windows 11 with other new functions. For example, Microsoft introduced an efficiency mode to limit access to PC resources for processes that are too demanding, a feature that was also introduced in its Edge browser to put inactive tabs to sleep.
