What will be the game of 2023? [GOTY] – Weighs at startup

2023 was one of the best gaming years in a long, long time. There was something for everyone: retro indies, high-profile AAA films or sequels to popular franchises.

For this reason, it won’t be easy to crown Game of the Year at the Game Awards. In a year full of blockbusters, which game stands out? Which game really deserves the title of “Game of the Year”? Hard to say.

However, we can highlight the games that deserve at least one nomination for the most prestigious award in gaming. We looked at the reviews and forums and revealed seven games that deserve at least one nomination in the Game of the Year category. We’ll keep the descriptions of the games a little light to give you a chance to discover the games for yourself if you haven’t already.

Sea of stars

This Quebec game from Sabotage Studio absolutely deserves a nomination for Game of the Year. Additionally, the Game Awards often reserve a spot for an indie game to win Game of the Year, and Sea of Stars certainly stood out with its spectacular reception. Players and critics agreed (which isn’t always the case): Sea of Stars is a gem. Its retro feel with modern accents and memorable dialogue make it a very good candidate for the Game of the Year award. Another indie, Dave the Diver, was very popular, but Sea of Stars was downright viral. What’s more, Sea of Stars reached its sales goals… for the year in just one week!

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

This is a game that has great chances of winning the prestigious prize. After all, its predecessor Breath of the Wild was named Game of the Year in 2017. And this new chapter isn’t just a simple sequel: it’s full of powers and mechanics that have completely changed the gameplay. Of course, to like it you’ll have to have enjoyed the new, very “open world” take on the franchise, but overall Tears of the Kingdom has been very well received. A very, very memorable game.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

A somewhat more “mainstream” game, Spider-Man 2 is a big sequel to the 2018 version that lets the PlayStation 5 shine, but isn’t without its flaws. Given the high-profile competition, I don’t think it’ll be the game of the year, but it’s definitely a game you should add to your library. You can read Our review here!

Do you remember Starfield? Yes, we don’t hear much from Bethesda about this game anymore. The title has been a bit polarizing due to its bugs and story, but it should still be noted that it is one of the most grandiose and ambitious games of the year. He is expected to be nominated, but his chances of winning are slim. He would have had a better chance in a year with less good games!

Baldur’s Gate 3

In my opinion, the Game of the Year award will fall between Baldur’s Gate 3 and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. This may surprise some, but there are good reasons. Once Tears of the Kingdom ends, there’s less going back, while Baldur’s Gate 3 never really ends. It’s full of content and Larian Studio can be really proud of its creation. Have you met anyone who played Baldur’s Gate 3 and didn’t like it? So.

Super Mario Bros. Marvel

Mario’s new 2D side-scrolling adventure surprised many, including me. I expected a good, entertaining game, nothing more. I was completely wrong: Super Mario Bros. Wonder completely reinvents the experience of a Mario game in this genre. Funny, original, colorful, funny; The game has very few flaws. I didn’t think I would include it in “my” list of games that could potentially win the award of the year, but I was wrong again! Read the Pèse review at the beginning only here.

Resident Evil 4

A complete remake of a game can win the award of the year, right? I know it’s a somewhat controversial decision, but we shouldn’t overlook how well received the Resident Evil 4 remake was. A Metacritic score of 93 from critics and 7.9 from fans is no small feat. Of course, Resident Evil 4 certainly won’t win the award of the year, but why not a small nomination?

There are many other games that shined in 2023. And Alan Wake 2, which releases on October 27th, is already being praised by gaming journalists. Armored Core VI is less popular, but had a notable launch. Final Fantasy XVI and Jedi Survivor also had good starts. Unfortunately there are only six nomination spots, so one of my main suggestions will come out on top (probably RE4), but I think the point has been made.
