PSU manufacturer Seasonic has suggested a rather original tip to reduce the risk of the connector of its RTX 4090 graphics card burning out: use a hairdryer to soften the cable. Actually not stupid.

The topic of melting graphics card ports will probably never stop being talked about. The new 12VHPWR connector on Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4090 still appears to be problematic for users, and has been for over a year.
While many solutions have been offered by various manufacturers for months, such as right-angled cables or a safer 12V 2×6 connector (compatible with the next RTX Super), Seasonic also has its opinion.
The renowned PC power supply manufacturer has actually released a guide for its users to minimize the possibility of overheating of the ports on high-end graphics cards from Nvidia. And one of her tips is to use a hairdryer.
A hairdryer to avoid overheating?
The instructions on the official Seasonic website are very clear: in order to make the connection of the power cable connected to the GPU as secure as possible, you need to pay close attention to its curvature.
The position of the 12VHPWR connector for graphics cards actually forces the cable to bend, which does not have a positive effect on the voltage of the various pins, which are much more numerous in this generation.

While the manufacturer remembers one of the instructions that has been known since last year, namely to only apply the curvature from the first 35 millimeters, his other tip is original, to say the least.
To soften the cable, Seasonic recommends using a hairdryer at the point to be bent, which will put less pressure on the connector’s various pins once it’s plugged in. However, the manufacturer has removed this guide from its website as we write these lines, in response to the various mockeries that may have appeared on the Internet in the last few hours.
A new cable to rule them all
The fact is that this tip is not the stupidest and in many cases can make cable management on a desktop computer easier. However, Seasonic offers a more durable solution with a new 12V 2×6 cable with a right-angle connector for graphics cards from 2024 and beyond, as already offered by a manufacturer like CableMod.

These cables will initially be available to a few hundred users before shipping with the brand’s next power supplies in 2024, particularly for the future GeForce RTX Super.
