At almost seven years old, the Nintendo Switch is celebrating a triumph. This year it became the third best-selling console in history, driven by strong licensing and a great game library. It also owes this success to its hybrid format, which allows it to juggle between a home console and a portable console. On the other hand, we can’t say that the Switch is helped by its multimedia features.
Despite its hybrid approach, Nintendo limits this aspect and prefers to focus exclusively on the video game aspect. Far from the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One – the other flagship consoles of the eighth generation – the Switch has always had to make do with a handful of applications like YouTube or Twitch. However, the famous streaming platform will say goodbye to the console in a few days.
Twich announces the end of support for its application for the Nintendo console. From November 6, 2023, downloading the Twitch app from the eShop will no longer be possible. Anyone who already has the app on their console will lose access from January 31, 2024.
A sudden disappearance, but one that should not upset the habits of Switch owners. In fact, the application turns out to be very simple and does not contain certain key functions. Unlike other consoles, it is not possible to stream a game from the console or access chat. Significant limitations that make the experience not very pleasant.
Will Twitch return to Switch 2?
On the Gizmodo page, a Twitch spokesperson explains: “We recently made the difficult decision to remove the Twitch application from Nintendo Switch. Nintendo remains a valued partner and we appreciate the support the Switch community has given Twitch and our streamers.”
The company did not disclose the reasons that led to the company withdrawing its application. Some may see this as a desire to prepare for the next Nintendo console. The Switch 2 would be much more powerful and could help provide a more complete version of Twitch.
