Impressive Cyclone on Jupiter: Discover Stunning New Images from NASA’s Juno Probe! – Tameteo.com

On its 54th orbit since reaching Jupiter’s orbit in 2016 Juno approached the cloud tops of Jupiter on September 7th. But not before we took some wonderful overall images, some of which are shown here.

Perhaps the most fascinating image shows a swirling cyclone in the North Polar Region nicknamed “Cyclone Bindi.” by citizen scientist Navaneeth Krishnan S, who processed it and can be seen below.

Krishnan S is one of several scientists taking the raw images, which can be downloaded for free on the mission’s website. and transform them into clear, colorful compositions. Other renowned scientists who have contributed to the Juno mission over the years include: These include Kevin M. Gill and Brian Swift, both of whom are mentioned in this text.

The images all come from JunoCam, a two-megapixel camera installed on the probe that captures images as it rotates. This creates problematic raw data that requires skill and experience to process. It takes about 34 light minutes for Juno’s data to reach Earth in the form of a radio transmission via NASA’s Deep Space Network and can be downloaded shortly afterwards.

Last month, Juno captured images of Io from just 22,243 kilometers away – the highest resolution images taken since 2007 – they show Loki Patera, Io’s largest volcanic depression, which contains a lava lake. Io is the most volcanic celestial body in the solar system. Hundreds of volcanoes and lava fountains erupt on its surface.

Future Juno flights and other missions

Juno engineers have planned additional close flybys. On December 30, 2023 and February 3, 2024, the school bus-sized probe will arrive just 1,500 km from Io’s tortured surface.

In future flybys, Juno could get even closer to Io, one of Jupiter’s moons.

The European Space Agency’s JUpiter ICy Moons Explorer (JUICE) mission is currently en route to Jupiter. Starting in July 2031, it will closely examine the moons Europa, Callisto and Ganymede. with 67 planned orbits around Jupiter that will give us images similar to those of Juno.

However, in December 2034, JUICE will enter Ganymede’s orbit and spend nine months creating images, maps and measurements. Juno’s next flyby of Jupiter will take place on October 15, 2023.
