How do I know for sure I need a new roof?
Older roofing shingles and wood shakes typically have a 15- to 30-year lifespan depending on the shingles’ quality, the location and tree cover of your home, and how well the roof was installed originally. Direct sunlight, weather/wind, and poor roof deck ventilation are rough on roofs.

12 years is a good rule of thumb to go by. At that point, check for these warning signs:

  • Curling shingles
  • Loss of the asphalt granulation (looks like bald spots)
  • Evidence of leaking on your ceilings
  • Cracked or discolored interior drywall (painted or wallpapered)
  • Decaying shingles
  • Missing shingles
  • Visible cracks
  • Wind damage
  • Broken or damaged shingles
  • Rusted or missing flashing
Will I have to replace gutters and downspouts at the same time?
If your gutters and downspouts are in good shape, our roofing contractors will work around them. To avoid damaging them, we don’t remove and reinstall them once your roof is complete.
Can I do the work myself?
Most work should not be done yourself. Professional roofing contractors are trained to safely and efficiently repair or replace roof systems. You can damage your roof system by using improper roofing techniques and severely injure yourself by falling off or through the roof.
Should I be concerned about leaves and pine straw buildup on my roof?
Yes, as dirt and debris (leaves, pine straw, limbs etc.) can hold moisture on the roof, you need to periodically check the roof and remove any buildup of debris, being careful not to damage the granule surface of the shingle. If left to build up on the roof, this debris can cause leaking and premature aging of the shingles.
What is an Impact Resistant Shingle?
Impact resistant shingles can withstand impacts from flying objects to a much greater extent than a common asphalt shingle. The impact resistant rating system ranks shingles’ resistance to impact into 4 levels – 1 through 4, with Class 4 as the highest rating level to impact resistance.
What are my options if I decide to re-roof?
You have two basic options. You can choose a complete replacement of the roof system, involving a tear-off of the old roof, or a re-cover over the existing roof, involving only the installation of a new membrane and surfacing. If you’ve already had one recover over your original roof, check with a professional roofing contractor to see if your deck can support a second recover.
